Cranial-Sacral Bodywork

Physiologically, the structural foundations of our selves are contained within our Cranial-Sacral system. This system includes our cranium, which holds our brain, and our spinal skeleton, which surrounds, supports and protects our spinal cord. This system is nourished and cleansed by the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) which flows throughout this center of operations for our central nervous system.

It is crucial to our overall health and well-being, on all levels (intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual), that this central nervous system, and its CSF, is lovingly cared for and tenderly maintained. A nervous system at ease can respond to the vagaries of life with greater resourcefulness and resilience and can be your “friend” during times of emotional turmoil. An agitated system is likely to bring fire to bear on fire and to create an experience of greater upheaval for yourself and others.

Back (and neck and shoulder) troubles are a frequent and common experience in today’s high stress/low exercise society and many of our back troubles are related to, as both cause and effect, our struggles in other aspects of our lives. As the supporting structure of our body, it is here that the tensions and stresses of our lives often are stored and, perhaps, this can work for awhile. Nonetheless, sooner or later, the loads may become too large and may overwhelm its capacities. Attending to and preventing damage to our cranial-sacral foundation can greatly improve our quality of life, even into our elder years. Receiving focused healing work in this area of our bodies can also facilitate a relaxation of hurt areas and the release of emotional traumas held in those areas.

There are many fine ways to improve the health of one’s cranial-sacral system, including: Hatha Yoga, Pilates, Meditation, daily exercise, chiropractic, acupuncture, and Polarity. Many of these practices work well in combination as each brings its own special character and area of relief to a body.

My practice, Cranial-Sacral Bodywork, is based on a heart-led blending of the biodynamic approach to cranial sacral therapy with the energy meridians and pressure points of Shiatsu and massage. A session usually begins with a hands-on Shiatsu-massage to relax the body and bring the mind into quiescence and as we come into communion with one another we shift into the lighter and more meditative touch which allows the Cranial-Sacral rhythms to come to the forefront for their acknowledgement and support. Clients often share that during this more meditative time they may have periods of dreaming, a sense of deep stillness or restfulness, or a period of increased tension in some area of their body and then a release.

Each person’s experience is unique. Sessions usually last 1.5-2 hours. Lightweight clothes or undergarments may be left on and oils are available if the client prefers.
